Complex courtroom drama
Multiple characters, deep insights into being immigrants in the US, a murder mystery – this wonderful complex novel is a page-turner. Kim is adept at leaving breadcrumbs for the reader to attempt to piece together who-done-it. The book is structured by days of the murder trial. We’re sure the one accused can’t be guilty of the actual act, but other revelations don’t let her off hook entirely. As each court day proceeds we’re introduced to new motives and hidden emotion from a number of players. Through it all Kim does a beautiful job exploring the clash of culture played out between two generations of a Korean family trying to make it in America.
